The Levellers were a group of people in seventeen century England who formed a great political movement for libertarianism. A few of the key Levellers were Richard Overton, John Lilburne, and William Walwyn.
Their views caused the first-ever movement for libertarian ideas. They believed that an individual owned themselves. A person should be able to do what they wanted with their lives and receive the fruits of their labor without question. The Levellers believed in property rights, free trade, religious toleration and other freedom-based ideas. This movement was probably the beginning of our modern day libertarianism.
