A Shift in Power

The shift in power between the Merovingians and the Carolingians occurred because the Carolingian family thought that the Merovingians were not worthy of the position of king. As the Mayor of the Palace, which acted as a prime minister of the kingdom, the Carolingians were doing most of the king’s work but without the title of king. They wanted that title, but it wouldn’t be right if they just took it, so Pepin the Short went to Pope Zachary to see what he thought. The Pope, now learning this new information, agreed with Pepin and blessed the change of dynasty, making Pepin the new king. Now the Carolingians were happily the new rulers of the Frankish kingdom.
