Thompson’s Sanction Theory

John Thompson believed that the slave holders who imposed positive sanctions on their slaves would be blessed by God. While on the other hand the slave holder tyrants who practiced negative sanctions such as whipping, starvation and over working the slaves would be punished and overruled by God.

Unfortunately it didn’t always happen the way Thompson thought it would. There were times when the tyrants would beat the slaves unmercifully which sometimes led to the death of a slave and the master would not even be reprimanded for his actions. Even the good masters sometimes were not able to afford to keep slaves because of past debts leading to the sale of many well treated slaves.
