Northup’s Separation

Northup, a free black man, could not believe that he actually had been kidnaped, he didn’t even know if he would ever see his family again. The thought of the separation from his family drew a dark cloud over his new life as a slave, if only his family was with him life would be much easier to tolerate. He consulted God for help of strength and perseverance to endure the times to come and he was granted such a blessing.

Eliza, a slave mother and friend, did not take the separation from her two young children very well. She grieved and grieved without end and never mentally or physically recovered.

The slave families were so devoted to each other as a family that when they were separated it was an extremely tough time indeed.
